Professor and CGCC member Audrey Moores (McGill University) received an award from the FRQNT program for outside Quebec exchanges for professors. She will spend two months in the laboratory of Bruce Koel at Princeton University where she will study the structure and composition of magnetic nanoparticles as well as their interactions with organic matter.

CGCC Member, Professor Willliam Lubell (UdeM) has added to his Molecules of Life's web site two new video capsules on the carbon footprint and how to have fun with carbon. The Molecules of Life Project aims to introduce chemistry within elementary schools by providing a curriculum built around important chemicals that are essential for life processes.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the Faculty of Science and Engineering of Université Laval has offered a series of conferences addressing a variety of topics related to sustainable developement. For this occasion, CGCC Member and Professor Thierry Ollevier (ULaval), gave before the public at large a lecture on the development prospects of a chemistry that is green and environmentally-friendly. Mr. André Bessette, an M.Sc. student under the supervison of CGCC Member and Professor Garry Hanan (UdeM), has become the laureate of the Young Innovator/Apprenticeship Training Award sponsored jointly by FRQNT and NSERC, which will be handed out on November 22, 2012 at the Innovation Gala of ADRIQ. The award highlights the impact of of the BMP-Innovation program on university-business partnerships.

On a voluntary commitment, CGCC Member and Professor Andreea Schmitzer (UdeM), gave with the help of 4 students (Julien Gravel, Alexandra Aubé, Claude-Elie Rosny et Josée Richard-Daniel) a series of 44 lectures in various schools of the Greater Montreal (elementary and high school levels) during the winter semester of 2012. The aim of the presentation entitled "Chemistry in everyday life" was to raise awareness among young children that chemistry is ubiquitous in their lives, may it be from cooking to the clothes they wear, or even medication and toys.

Mr. Vincent Demers-Carpentier, a Ph.D. student under the supervision of CGCC Member, Professor Peter McBreen (ULaval), has become the first 2012 laureate of the contest "Étudiants-chercheurs étoiles" in the category of the Fonds Nature et Technologies for his work on scanning tunelling microscopy (Ref: Science, 2011, 334, 776-780).

The work on green chemistry of two CGCC members, Professor Chaojun Li and Professor Audrey Moores (McGill), has been highlighted during a segment of the TV broadcast Le Code Chastenay at Télé-Québec on March 27, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Iron oxide nanoparticles developed as an heterogeneous catalyst for organic reactions were shown to be easily recoverable with the help of a simple magnet (Ref: Chem. Commun., 2012, 48, 3360-3362 and Green Chem., 2010, 12, 570-573).

CGCC Member, Professor Audrey Moores (McGill) has participated in the radio show Les Années lumière broadcasted on December 4, 2011 at 12:15 p.m. on La Première chaîne de Radio-Canada (95.1 FM). It was a special program that covered the work and legacy of Marie Curie and highlighted the importance of chemistry in our society. She, along with other invited speakers (Yves Gingras, historian of science at UQAM and Normand Voyer, chemistry professor at Université Laval) can be heard in the second portion of the broadcast which focused on green chemistry.

IziChem, a new company stemming from UdeM has won the 3rd prize of the 2010 Entrepreneurship and Innovation contest. The company makes resins for preparing therapeutic peptides and is the results of efforts by three researchers, including CGCC Member Professor Willliam Lubell (UdeM).
